Teachers From Nine States To Attend Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Teacher Institute This SummerParticipants Represent Elementary, Middle and High School ClassroomsSt. Petersburg, FL, July 8, 2008 – To support educational efforts on the foundation of our nation’s landmark democracy, PSCU Financial Services is providing grants for 12 elementary, middle and high school teachers to attend Credit Union Week at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Teacher Institute in Williamsburg, Va. The cooperative and its member-owner credit unions have sponsored attendance at the Institute for almost 100 teachers over the last four years. This year’s attendees represent nine states: California, Texas, New York, Florida, Nevada, Idaho, Missouri, New Mexico and Alabama. The 2008 Credit Union Week for middle/high school teachers is scheduled for July 23-30, and elementary teachers will attend the event July 29-Aug. 5. This interactive week-long seminar equips American History teachers with a fresh approach to communicating the principles of America’s unique history and system of government. The grant provides more than $2,000 for each teacher, which covers program admission, room and meals and a $200 stipend to be used for travel expenses or the purchase of educational materials. Participating teachers share new interactive teaching techniques with other educators so that ‘active learning classrooms’ can make history exciting for students throughout the school district. Instructional materials in a variety of media are provided to participants for use in their classrooms. The Institute reached over 2,000 teachers in 2007. A 2007 graduate of the CWF Teachers Institute was named “Teacher of the Year” in her home school district in Broward County, Fla. “A presidential election year reminds us again of the need to educate students about liberty, civic rights and responsibilities within a democratic nation. The cooperative actively supports the educational activities of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation so that future generations can learn from the past and fully appreciate the principles that form the basis for the freedoms we enjoy today,” said David J. Serlo, President and CEO, PSCU Financial Services.
