PSCU Financial Services Provides Grants for 12 Teachers To Attend Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Teacher Institute

American History Educators to Learn Innovative Teaching Methods At Interactive Week-Long Seminar

St. Petersburg, FL, February 26, 2008 – PSCU Financial Services announced that the cooperative is providing grants for 12 elementary, middle and high school teachers from across the country to attend Credit Union Week at The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Teacher Institute in Williamsburg, Va. The cooperative and its member-owner credit unions have sponsored attendance at the Institute for almost 100 teachers.

Applications are now available at www.pscufs.com and must be completed by Monday, March 24. Credit Union Week for middle/high school teachers is scheduled for July 23-30, 2008, and elementary teachers will attend the event July 29-Aug. 5, 2008.

Credit unions can download the grant application and send it to schools in their local areas. This is an excellent opportunity for credit unions to equip local American History teachers with a unique learning opportunity that will benefit area students for years to come. The grant provides more than $2,000 for each teacher, which covers program admission, room and meals and a $200 stipend to be used for travel expenses or the purchase of educational materials. Seminar participants learn innovative methods for communicating the principles of America’s unique history and system of government.

Teacher Institute participants learn new interactive teaching techniques and then pass these techniques along to other educators so that ‘active learning classrooms’ can make history exciting for students throughout the school district. The Institute reached over 2,000 teachers in 2007. A 2007 graduate of the CWF Teachers Institute was named “Teacher of the Year” in her home school district in Broward County, Fla.

“PSCU Financial Services actively supports the educational activities of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation because it teaches the unique principles that brought our nation into existence and forms the basis for the freedoms we enjoy today,” said David J. Serlo, President and CEO, PSCU Financial Services. “We believe that today’s students need to understand how the principles of our democratic system influence their lives and become committing to preserving them.”

The cooperative has made a long-term commitment to The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and has financially supported its programs for four years. During that time it sponsored CWF electronic field trips (web-based interactive events) for students and resource kits that include educational tools and lessons for classroom instruction. These programs have brought the events and principles of our government’s foundation during Colonial times to life for thousands of communities and more than 20 million students.
