PSCU Financial Services, FDR Fund Scholarship Programs For The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation

St. Petersburg, FL, Feb. 3, 2005 – PSCU Financial Services and First Data Western Union Foundation have jointly donated $100,000 to fund educational programs for students and seminars for teachers conducted by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit institution that preserves and operates the restored 301-acre Colonial Williamsburg site and produces educational materials related to the founding of the United States as a nation and life in the 18th century.

Half of the joint contribution will pay for interactive electronic field trips for students and resource kits that include educational tools and lessons for classroom instruction. The electronic field trips are web-based interactive television events that bring Colonial times to life for more than 4 million students annually. The remaining half of the gift will underwrite the newly established Credit Union Week at the Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute. This grant allows 25 teachers to attend—at no charge—an intensive week-long seminar at Colonial Williamsburg, in Williamsburg, Va. Seminar participants learn innovative methods for communicating the principles of America’s unique history and system of government and can prepare new instructional materials for use in their own classrooms.

The Credit Union Week is scheduled for Aug. 2-9, 2005. The grant provides more than $2,000 for each teacher, which covers program admission, room and meals and a $200 stipend to be used for travel expenses or the purchase of educational materials.

“Since our founding fathers established the democratic freedoms that we enjoy as both as individuals and as corporations, we believe that sponsoring outstanding educational programs like these is an ideal way for credit unions to support their local schools and communities," said David J. Serlo, President and CEO of PSCU Financial Services. “We need to nurture in our students a commitment to our democratic system to ensure that the freedoms we currently enjoy will be guaranteed for future generations."

The teachers and schools that receive these materials will be selected from nominations by member-owner credit unions. Applications must be completed by March 15, 2005. Credit unions can nominate more than one teacher or local school.
